Using Ultraviolet Disinfection to Treat Wastewater:
In
general, facilities employing advanced secondary or
tertiary processes are good candidates for ultraviolet
disinfection. Recommended wastewater quality parameters
for applications of standard ultraviolet disinfections
systems are:
- Maximum Total Suspended
Solids (TSS): 30mg/l
- Maximum Biological Oxygen
Demand (BOD): 30mg/l
- Minimum
Ultraviolet Transmission: 65%
Effectively treating effluents with high TSS and BOD and
transmission levels lower than 65% can often be
accomplished but may require added measures to either
improve water quality or increase ultraviolet dosage
levels. Applications with marginal water
quality or larger systems (more than 10 million gallons
per day) can be further examined for the suitability of
ultraviolet disinfection by creating a pilot study
programs at the treatment plant location. |
